Paj Ntaub Voice

Legends say that the Hmong once had a writing system but were prohibited by the Han Chinese to use, teach, or learn it.We devised a trick to disguise the Hmong characters in the designs of the women’s skirts, collars, and other clothing items. Over time, we have forgotten the meanings of the designs on the clothing.Today, "paj ntaub" (pronounced “pa-dao”) is the Hmong word for the intricate needleworks stitched with bright red, green, orange, or purple threads in such styles as batik, cross-stitch, reverse appliqué, or other embroidery forms. These fine needleworks are designed to be worn, not hung on the walls, and uniquely distinguishes the Hmong from other groups. Like paj ntaub, the writings and artwork, as varied at they are, in this journal weave together a living tapestry of authentic Hmong voices.

Paj Ntaub Voice is the premier literary arts journal focused on Hmong art and culture, containing original literary and visual artwork as well as criticism. Our mission is to support Hmong writers and artists by providing a community forum to foster Hmong writing and art, thus nurturing the continual growth and celebration of Hmong heritage. Our purpose is that of an unprecedented one, blending old with new documentation techniques to reflect the artistic soul of the Hmong community. Paj Ntaub Voice’s project goals are the following:
• to build a body of Hmong writers and artists,
• to promote writing by Hmong writers as well as writing about the Hmong,
• to create a community forum to engage in discussions on issues that affect the Hmong, and
• to celebrate and affirm Hmong writers in a free public reading.
